Avery 5160 Name Tag Template

Avery 5160 is one of the most widely used label formats in the US. Each sheet holds 30 labels at 2.625" wide × 1" tall, on standard US Letter paper (8.5" × 11"). The format works with any home or office inkjet or laser printer.

The 30-up layout makes it the go-to choice whenever you need a lot of labels fast - a class of 30 students fits exactly one sheet, and a team of 90 fits three. The compact size is ideal for desk labels, cubby tags, supply stickers, and high-volume check-in badges where people are reading names up close.

Classroom desk labels. A class of 30 fits on exactly one sheet - no cutting sheets in half, no waste. Print first names only in a bold font (18-20pt works well at 1 inch tall), and the label reads clearly from a normal desk distance. If you reassign seats mid-year, reprinting one sheet takes less than a minute.

Student cubby and supply labels. The 1-inch height is tight, but a short first name or a two-letter initial prints cleanly. For supply labels (glue sticks, pencil boxes, folders), the smaller size is actually an advantage - it does not cover the whole item.

Large-group check-in tables (60-200 people). When you have a big group and everyone will be standing close together anyway - a reception line, a registration table, a school open house - 5160 lets you print the whole list on two or three sheets. Stack them in a box alphabetically and you have a walk-up name tag station without buying badge holders or lanyards.

Office and internal team events. Quick internal meetings, training sessions, onboarding days for small cohorts - any situation where people will be sitting around a table and can read a small label. Print once, stick on, done.

When 5160 is not the right choice. If attendees need to read each other's names from more than two feet away - a conference floor, a networking happy hour, a trade show - the 1-inch height is too small. Switch to Avery 5163 (4" × 2") for those situations. One rule of thumb: if people will be standing and mingling, go bigger. If they will be sitting at desks or tables, 5160 is fine.

Set print scale to Actual Size or 100%. This is the single most important step. If your printer dialog says "Fit to Page," "Scale to Fit," or shows any percentage other than 100%, the labels will shift. Turn it off.

Do a plain paper test first. Print one page on regular copy paper before using your label stock.

Check your printer's margin settings. Some printers add a small default margin even when you do not ask for one. If your test print is consistently off by the same amount in one direction, look for a margin or offset setting in your printer driver.

Use the PDF as-is. Do not open it in Word or resize it. Open the PDF directly and print from your browser or PDF viewer at 100%.

Compare on a window. Hold your plain-paper test print up against a blank label sheet against a bright window. You will see the label grid through both sheets and know immediately whether the alignment is off before touching your actual label stock.

Avery 5160 is technically an address label format that became the default compact name tag size for classrooms and offices. The 2.625" × 1" dimensions fit a first name cleanly at 16-20pt, and the 30-per-sheet layout means one page covers a full class or a full small-team roster.

You do not need to buy Avery-brand sheets specifically. Any 30-up label sheet at 2.625" × 1" on US Letter stock will work - including Amazon Basics, Staples house brand, and Office Depot store brand.
